The Social Security Administration will soon open an online portal that will provide the agency with a means to “socialize and manage” the Social Security system, according to a memo issued Tuesday.
The portal will provide a way for beneficiaries to “communicate directly with the Social Services Administration regarding their benefits,” the memo said.
It did not specify what the service would be.
The new portal, to be part of the agency’s social services portal, will be accessible at a federal website, the memo noted.
The department will be able to “use a variety of resources, including electronic services and tools to support its mission of supporting people to achieve the American Dream,” it said.
The agency also will be empowered to issue “new rules and guidance,” it added.
It is not clear how the agency plans to use the new portal.
Social Security said it does not yet have a specific service it plans to create.
It does not have an official website, though a social media account has been set up to help users.
In an emailed statement, a Social Security spokeswoman said that the agency has “significant plans to build an innovative platform for social sharing and community engagement to strengthen our operations and enhance the ability of our beneficiaries to access social services.”
